Colombia agrees to take back illegal immigrants

The White House announced late Sunday, January 26, that it has reached an agreement with Colombia to deport illegal immigrants from the United States, lifting tariffs on Colombia.

The White House said in a statement that the agreement would allow the United States to take back all Colombians who illegally enter the United States, including those who were deported on military aircraft. Earlier, Colombian President Gustavo Petro had refused to take back citizens deported on U.S. military aircraft, and had demanded that his citizens be treated with dignity, including by sending them back on civilian aircraft.

In retaliation for the Colombian president’s refusal, the Trump administration threatened to impose additional tariffs and sanctions.

The White House said in a statement that the US will continue to impose visa restrictions on certain Colombian government officials and increased scrutiny of goods imported from Colombia until the first flight carrying illegal Colombian migrants arrives.
